On 27 January 2017, the BioInformatics Industrial User Platform (BIUP) organised a company visit to Genetwister in Wageningen. More than 20 participants from almost as many different companies involved in bioinformatics shared ideas on cloud computing (Bluebee), DTL (Inge Schats), and bioinformatics for plant breeding (Genetwister). And of course, some time was reserved for networking.
The BioInformatics Industrial User Platform (BIUP) is a DTL Interest Group consisting of Dutch companies that use bioinformatics expertise and tools in their research and product development. It is an open platform for knowledge exchange and informal discussions. BIUP organises events such as the recent company visit on a regular basis.
“The thing I like about these events is the informal setting and the inspiration I get from new Dutch startups related to bioinformatics like Bluebee. At every event, I learn something relevant or make a valuable connection,” says Emiel Ver Loren van Themaat of the DSM Biotechnology Center in Delft. He is one of the coordinators of the BIUP.
