Hackathon to integrate the ELIXIR Data Stewardship Wizard with other ELIXIR resources

On December 4-6, 2018 the ELIXIR Data Stewardship Wizard team (ELIXIR-CZ, ELIXIR-NL) welcomed the FAIRsharing, TeSS (both ELIXIR-UK) and ELIXIR-SI eLearning Platform – EeLP (ELIXIR-SI) teams to the beautiful city of Prague during the “Mikuláš” (Dutch “Sinterklaas”) celebrations, to take part in a hackathon to share information and work towards interoperability and integration between ELIXIR resources.

An external services integration framework has been designed for the Data Stewardship Wizard (DSW) to integrate these and future external services. After two successful days, FAIRsharing standard (models/formats, guidelines, ontologies, identifier schema), database/repository and data policy metadata now power a growing number of questions in the DSW.

We explored ways to link TeSS teaching materials and events to the appropriate sections in the DSW, allowing users to not only plan their data stewardship but also to find educational resources to help them. FAIRsharing and TeSS worked to further their integration, linking standards, databases and policies with training materials and events, to be displayed on both FAIRsharing and TeSS. Further integration between EeLP and TeSS (automatic registration and increased visibility of EeLP events in TeSS) was discussed. The ELIXIR-CZ team developed a DSW UI prototype for FAIRsharing integration, which will be implemented during Q1/2019.

The DSW will also explore adoption of the FAIRsharing Subject Resource Application Ontology (SRAO).

We hope this hackathon will be the first of many because in just a few days we have found a number of ways in which we can work together and further integrate and add to our resources and the ELIXIR community.
