ELIXIR facilitates development of comprehensive disease map for COVID-19

In an international effort to organise the molecular processes underlying the SARS-CoV-2 virus-host interactions in COVID-19, 196 contributors from 31 countries have created a visual exploration and analytics tool.

This resource will improve researchers’ understanding of COVID-19 and speed up the development of efficient diagnostics and therapies. It will also facilitate collaboration between clinicians, virologists or computational biologists in developing robust disease models or in repositioning of existing drugs.

ELIXIR Netherlands has contributed to this interdisciplinary project by linking various ELIXIR core data resources to WikiPathways using BridgeDb and thus facilitating combined data analysis. BridgeDb is one of currently two Dutch ELIXIR Recommended Interoperability Resources (RIRs).

Lots of participants from ELIXIR NL have further participated in an ELIXIR Interoperability online hackathon. Here a workflow scheme has been designed to increase the interoperability between the various resources on which the COVID-19 Disease Map is built upon.

Check out the nature article describing the project: “COVID-19 Disease Map, building a computational repository of SARS-CoV-2 virus-host interaction mechanisms“.
