SURF supports, develops and operates the national ICT infrastructure (e-infrastructure) for higher education and research. As of 2011, SURF has been responsible for designing the Dutch e-infrastructure for researchers.

Optimising the potential of ICT
SURF helps to optimise the potential of ICT by offering access to the latest innovations under favourable conditions . We also contribute to this goal by facilitating connections between technology and people. Thanks to SURF, students, lecturers and scientists in the Netherlands have had access to the best possible internet and ICT facilities for more than 25 years.

The SURF organisation
The SURF organisation consists of the SURF holding and its 3 operating companies SURFnet, SURFmarket and SURFsara. The holding organisation focuses on administrative harmonisation and the stimulation (or promotion) of ICT innovations in higher education and research. Services are provided through SURF’s operating companies. SURF and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) are jointly responsible for establishing the Netherlands eScience Center. SURF also owns Vancis, a commercial market party.

Collaboration
SURF is collaborative organisation by nature. This is reflected in its collaboration with connected higher education and research institutions. These institutions share in our knowledge and benefit from economies of scale. We also encourage experts from these institutions to share knowledge through our other special interest groups (SIGs). Together, they develop knowledge on the latest ICT-related themes. Such collaborations are essential in retaining the Netherlands’ leading position in ICT.
