Patient and disease information is gathered in many different forms and at many different places around the world, ranging from case report forms in hospitals to disease information gathered from scientific literature. Consequently, data that could potentiallly help patients find appropriate care, or help researchers find new treatments are scattered and non-trivial to combine (if access is granted). If the data at each location would be findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable for humans, but also computers, and conform to a common set of standards than we substantially accellerate information retrieval for health care and data integration for research.
