ELIXIR is featured in OECD’s report ‘Building digital workforce capacity and skills for data-intensive science’.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has published a report which provides an overview over the human resource requirements for data-intensive science. It points out which challenges and training needs (still) exist.  The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the critical importance of data-intensive science and the need to strengthen the digital capacity and skills of the scientific enterprise as… Continue reading

New focus groups on training at the Research Data Alliance (RDA)

Research Data Alliance’s (RDA) Interest Group ‘Education and Training on Handling of Research Data (ETHRD-IG)’ just started focus groups on training materials. The focus lays on minimal documentation/metadata, extended documentation/metadata and training material repositories. You are invited to join the meetings and contribute to the output.

ELIXIR’s FAIR Training working group published a paper in PLoS Computational Biology – ‘10 Simple Rules for Making training materials FAIR.’

Imagine you’d want to produce a new bioinformatics training course or update an existing one.  However, appropriate materials are scattered across different repositories, siloed in their home institutions and/or lack the metadata required to re(use) them. This is a classical problem which can be tackled by FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) principles. The ELIXIR working group on FAIR training… Continue reading

The EU-funded ELIXIR Europe project CONVERGE, bringing together FAIR life-science data management in all ELIXIR countries, officially kicked off

ELIXIR-NL and DTL (as the coordinating head office) are more than happy to be part of it. Integrating earlier efforts from an ELIXIR Implementation study on Data Stewardship and from the ZonMw funded work on Data Stewardship competencies and skills, ELIXIR-NL will lead the training and capacity building activities. The aim is to establish a comprehensive ELIXIR Training and Capacity… Continue reading

Professionalizing FAIR Data Stewardship in the life sciences: defining job criteria & skills

Within the life sciences more and more data is generated and research often requires sharing and combining data. Personalized medicine is a prominent example where data from different disciplines need to be combined to determine the best treatment for an individual. Think about combining vastly different data from health records, pharmaceutical treatment history, research findings and dietary intake, to name… Continue reading

Successful 5th BioSB conference on Bioinformatics and Systems Biology

The BioSB research school offers a vibrant environment for the scientific education in integrative bioinformatics and systems biology. As these are core themes of DTL‘s ‘Learning Program’, DTL is actively involved in the BioSB research community. Together with multiple academic partners DTL further co-creates BioSB’s course portfolio and together with ELIXIR-NL, DTL (managed by Femke Francissen) also organizes BioSB’s yearly… Continue reading

DTL and Helis Academy launch a FAIR data stewardship course for ‘wet lab’ scientists

Within the Helis Academy project, DTL organizes a FAIR data stewardship course. This course will introduce ‘wet lab’ scientists (from industry and academia) to important concepts on data handling (data stewardship). A general introduction to the data life cycle, the FAIR principles and a definition of data stewardship will be part of this 3-day course. It will take place in… Continue reading

Upcoming HPC workshops organised by SURFsara and ELIXIR-NL

SURFsara in collaboration with ELIXIR-NL and DTL is organising two High-Performance Computing workshops targeted at life science researchers. Both workshops will take place in Utrecht in SURF offices. “Cluster Computing for Life Sciences” is a two-day workshop on 23-24 April 2019. On the first day, participants will learn the basics of the Unix shell and how to work on the… Continue reading

Boost Your Visibility – Improving F of FAIR for Dutch Training and Data Resources through Bioschemas

On February 7 and 8 DTL and ELIXIR Netherlands will organise a workshop/hackathon for content providers of Life Science resources such as proteins, samples, beacons, tools and training events and materials in Utrecht, The Netherlands. During the event you can learn how your to make your resources rank higher on Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search pages, how to receive… Continue reading
